Is Audible worth it in Australia? The sums, and the free alternative

Audible is good value for some listeners and money down the drain for others. The difference is how many books you finish a month, and whether you have tried your library's free apps first. Here are the numbers, checked on 3 October 2026.

The short answer

Worth it if you finish at least one audiobook a month and the ones you want cost more than about A$16 each, which most do: the median Audible Australia price of the 74 audiobooks on this site was A$21.40. Not worth it if you listen to one book every few months, or if your library's free apps already lend what you want. Try the library first.

The sums

One credit a month (Premium, A$16.45). A credit buys any audiobook outright, whatever its price. The median cash price of the 74 audiobooks we checked for this site was A$21.40, and the long ones cost far more: Out of Your Mind was A$48.76 and Boy Swallows Universe A$39.14. Spent on those, a credit is a clear saving. Spent on a short book such as The Four Agreements (A$11.82 cash), it is a loss: you would have been better off buying it.

Paying yearly. Twelve credits for A$164.50 is about A$13.71 a credit; twenty-four for A$274.60 is about A$11.44. Only worth it if you are sure you will use them.

Standard (A$8.99). One book a month, chosen from the whole collection, but it is yours only while you stay a member. Think of it as renting. Good value if you listen to one book a month and never re-listen.

The rule of thumb. If you would not have bought the book for more than A$16.45 anyway, the credit is not saving you money.

The free route: your library

Most Australian council and state libraries lend audiobooks free through Libby (by OverDrive) or BorrowBox, and some offer both. You need a library card, which is free. Loans typically run two or three weeks, and popular titles have waiting lists.

How well it covers this shelf, from the Libby catalogues of two big libraries on 3 October 2026:

  • Brisbane City Council Libraries held The Power of Now (26 copies), Man's Search for Meaning, The Alchemist, The Untethered Soul, A New Earth, Meditations, A Grief Observed and Option B, among others.
  • City of Sydney Library held fewer of the spiritual titles but large numbers of some Australian ones: 57 copies of The Kindness Revolution and 56 of Terra Nullius.
  • Neither held The Four Agreements, The Daily Stoic or most of the Ryan Holiday books.

So the library covers many of the classics, not everything, and not always this week. Every listening card on this site tells you which of the two catalogues had the book.

Spotify

Spotify Premium Individual (A$15.99 a month) includes 15 hours of audiobook listening a month from a catalogue of more than 700,000 titles, on top of music. Fifteen hours is two average audiobooks. Unused hours lapse at the end of the month, and you own nothing. If you already pay for Spotify, try it before you add Audible.

Who should pay for Audible

  • Yes: you finish one or more audiobooks a month, you want new releases without a waiting list, or you want to keep what you buy.
  • Maybe: you listen in bursts. Join, use the credits, then pause or cancel; anything bought with a credit stays yours.
  • No: you listen occasionally, your library has what you want, or you already have Spotify Premium.

Common questions

How much is Audible in Australia?

On 3 October 2026, Audible Standard was A$8.99 a month and Audible Premium was A$16.45 a month, both with a 30-day free trial for new members. Premium is also sold yearly at A$164.50 for 12 credits or A$274.60 for 24.

How do Audible credits work?

Premium members get one credit a month. A credit buys any one audiobook, whatever its price, and you keep the book even if you cancel. Credits roll over month to month but some expire, so check Audible's credits page if you are saving them.

Can I get audiobooks free in Australia?

Yes. Most Australian public libraries lend audiobooks free through the Libby or BorrowBox apps; you only need a free library card. Popular titles may have a waiting list.

Is Spotify better than Audible for audiobooks?

If you already pay for Spotify Premium, its 15 hours a month may be all you need. Audible suits people who listen more than that or want to keep their books.
