Eckhart Tolle's books: which to start with, and in what order
He has written fewer books than people think, and they overlap more than the covers suggest. Here is the order they came out, the order we would read them in, and which ones are better heard in his own voice.

The short answer
Start with The Power of Now (1997). If you want something shorter first, Practicing the Power of Now is under three hours. Then A New Earth (2005), which applies the same ideas to ego, relationships and purpose. His later audio programmes repeat the core teaching in new words; hear them only if the books worked for you.
Start here: a three-step path
Step 1. Practicing the Power of Now (2.9 hours). Short excerpts and exercises lifted from his first book. If you are not sure Tolle is for you, this is the cheapest test, in time and money: A$12.33 on Audible Australia, and Brisbane's Libby catalogue lends it.
Step 2. The Power of Now (7.6 hours). The full teaching: the mind as a compulsive commentator, the "pain-body" of old emotional pain, and presence as the way out. It is written as questions and answers, so it can be heard in short pieces.
Step 3. A New Earth (9.2 hours). Wider and more practical: how the ego shows up in work, relationships and identity, and what an "awakened" purpose might look like. Oprah Winfrey chose it for her book club in 2008 and ran a ten-week online class on it with Tolle, which is why it sold so widely.

| 2003 | Stillness Speaks Short numbered passages, closer to sayings than chapters. | Read by Tolle, 2.6 hours |
| 2005 | A New Earth The ego, the 'pain-body' and purpose. Oprah Winfrey's Book Club pick in 2008. | Read by Tolle, 9.2 hours |

| 2025 | Discovering the Essential Self Audio programme from Sounds True. | Read by Tolle, 8.6 hours |
Two things the order lists do not tell you. First, Stillness Speaks and Practicing the Power of Now are short and largely drawn from the same teaching, so you do not need both. Second, the audio programmes (The Journey Into Yourself, The Joy of Being, Breaking the Habit of Negative Thinking, Discovering the Essential Self) are recorded talks and guided practice rather than books. They suit walks and long drives; they are not where to begin.
Read or hear him?
Hear him, if his voice suits you. Tolle reads all his own audiobooks, slowly and quietly, with pauses where the book has white space. That pace is part of the teaching, but it also makes the audiobooks longer than you might expect. Audible's free sample is the fair test. If the voice does not work for you, the print edition loses nothing important.
His books are among the easier spiritual audiobooks to borrow free. Brisbane City Council Libraries' Libby catalogue held 26 copies of The Power of Now and 9 of A New Earth when we checked; City of Sydney held The Power of Now.
What Tolle says happened to him
In the introduction to The Power of Now, Tolle writes that until he was 29 he lived with near-constant anxiety and periods of suicidal depression. He describes a night, soon after his 29th birthday, when the thought "I cannot live with myself any longer" led him to ask who the "I" and the "self" were, and says he woke the next morning into a peace that stayed. He describes the years that followed as spent with little else but that peace, before people began asking him to teach. That is his own account; we report it as his, and the book is the only source for it.
He was born Ulrich Tölle in Germany in 1948, lived in Spain as a teenager, studied in London, and has lived in Vancouver since the 1990s.
